If you’re looking for a sleeper at running back to stash on your bench then you may want to look towards Philadelphia Eagles running back Wendell Smallwood.

Smallwood is currently in a battle for reps with both Corey Clement, LeGarrette Blount and Darren Sproles.

But Philly hasn’t seen much out of Blount, Sproles has some serious mileage on his legs and while Clement has been impressive many believe Smallwood is beating him out.

Keep in mind that Smallwood missed the first two preseason games with a hamstring injury and is still getting his feet under him.

During Thursday’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, Smallwood stood out in a limited role, rushing the ball four times but gaining 28 yards (7.0 average).

Smallwood looked in top form.

“Felt good,” Smallwood said. “Was real fresh out there. Good to get some live game reps, get some live bullets going, get out there with the first offensive line and see how the running game will go, get those early jitterbugs out.”

While he was out Smallwood stayed in the playbook digesting as much as possible for preparation.

“I stayed dialed-in the whole time I was hurt, as far as the game plan and playbook. So I don’t think I fell behind at all. Missing those game reps was tough, I needed those. I think it was good for me to get out there tonight and show what I could do.”

Smallwood seems to be the favorite to win the majority of the rushes in Philly and even if he isn’t, if Blount continues to struggle and Sproles continues to show more as a receiver than an every-down runner, Smallwood can find himself in a starting role at some point during the season.

Stash him on your bench if you can.
